Centrowitz Gets ‘A’ Standard, Breaks School Record

PARIS, France – Matthew Centrowitz just needed to run the IAAF ‘B’ standard of 3:38.00 at Friday’s Diamond League meet in Paris to become eligible for the World Championships next month in South Korea.

Instead, the junior from Arnold, Md., roared to the World ‘A’ standard and a school record as he finished the Meeting Areva’s 1,500 meters at Stade de France in 3:34.69.

That time was nearly two seconds better than the previous school mark of 3:36.48 initially set by Olympic gold medalist Joaquim Cruz in 1984 and matched by A.J. Acosta last summer.

The four Americans in Paris fared exceptionally well in a race won by Morocco’s Amine Laalou in 3:32.15. After Asbel Kiprop of Kenya took second in 3:33.04, the USA’s Bernard Legat was third in 3:33.11, Leonel Manzano was sixth in 3:33.66, Duck alum Andrew Wheating was ninth in 3:34.39 and Centrowitz took 11th. All four made it under the IAAF World Championships ‘A’ time of 3:35.00.

“I’m extremely happy that all four Americans ran the ‘A’ standard for the World Championships and the Olympics,” said Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna, who will serve as the men’s head coach for Team USA at the IAAF World Championships. “There is clearly more gas in the tank.

“I look forward to seeing how the remainder of the summer plays out for Centro. Wheating will now focus on making the final in Daegu.”

In other Oregon track-related news this week, senior high jumper Justin Frick set another personal best for the second week in a row at Thursday’s Oregon Track Club all-comers meet at Lane Community College. After clearing 7-3/2.21m last week, Frick improved to 7-3.75/2.23m. That is the third-best clearance in school history.

Also, Oregon graduate Rachel Yurkovich will be headed to the IAAF World Championships after throwing a personal best 198-2 to win the javelin at the Harry Jerome Classic a week ago in Vancouver, B.C. That mark, a PR by a foot, exceeded the World ‘B’ standard and secured a spot on Team USA for the 2011 national runner-up.
